The Wish-Fulfilling Reliquary Box:
Advice from Orgyen Drölma (the Mother of Khenchen Lama Pelgyeypa Dorjé Rinpoché)

by Orgyen Drölma (o rgyan sgrol ma)

Tibetan title: o rgyan sgrol ma’i zhal gdams yid bzhin nor bu’i ga’u

NAMO GURU ĀRYA TĀRAYE.

The freedoms and advantages, impermanence, virtuous and harmful karma:

The precious certainty of their inexorability;

In the state of mindful understanding and careful concern,

Put all your strength, until renunciation is born.

Loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy,

And equanimity, the precious Mind of Enlightenment:

In the state of generating Bodhicitta endowed with the Two Benefits (for self and others),

Be diligent, until Calm Abiding (Śamatha) and Clear Perception (Vipaśyanā) is born.

The three aspects of appearance, sound and awareness, the meaning of the Three Kāyas,

The precious (Stages of) Generation, Completion and Great Completion:

In the state of the truth of the sublime equality of Appearance and Existence,

Meditate, until the Four Visions[1] are brought to culmination.

The kindness of the sublime Gurus,

And clear mindfulness of the Tutelary Deities (yidam):

In the state of being undistracted night and day,

Secure the capture of the Heart Essence Citadel.

Without falling into the Eight Worldly Dharmas in relation to the (Sublime) Dharma,

Without being hypocritical toward friends,

Practice, until the true face of the infallible Supreme Triple Gem

Is beheld.

And thus, so it was that on the first day of the waning moon, on the 16th day of the 12th Month of Victory in the Male Earth Dog Year of the Sixty Year Tibetan Astrological Cycle[2], this very advice from Orgyen Drölma, in verse form, was written down by his mother’s personal attendant, Pelgyepa Dorjé (Khenchen Lama Rinpoché), who, right then and there, acted as the scribe. May it be virtuous!

[1] The Four Visions are: 1) The visionary appearance of the direct perception of reality (chos nyid mngon sum gi snang ba). 2) The visionary appearance of ever-increasing contemplative experience (nyams gong ‘phel ba’i snang ba). 3) The visionary appearance of reaching the limit of awareness (rig pa tshad phebs kyi snang ba). 4) And, the visionary appearance of the cessation of clinging to reality (chos nyid du ‘dzin pa zad pa’i snang ba).
